Lingerie is the french term for undergarments and meens all kinds of clothes that are worn directly on the naked skin. It includes many different kinds of undergarments out of different materials and for both genders. In the English linguistic usage lingerie refers mainly to undergarments made of fine materials. Lingerie may also refer to undergarments incorporating flexible, stretchy, sheer, or decorative materials like Lycra, nylon, polyester, satin, wool, lace, silk and sheer fabric. However, certain cotton or synthetic undergarments can also be considered to be lingerie. Today lingerie has to be appealing or erotic, more than usefull. But there is also functional undergarments for sports or work.
In former times women wore no such things as underclothes. They were use to the corsets to keep their figure in shape. It was in the early 19th century, that women freed themselfs fom the burden of the unconvenient corsets, that limited their movement and somtimes also hold them back from breathing deeply. So it was no wonder, that women fell unconscious by the tiniest bit of excitement. In other centuries, undergarment was only produced as a usefull cloth. They were worn out of hygenic reasons and out of modesty. It often was made of materials that were cheap and easily available in the near. So linen and wool were the origin materials for the first pieces of undergarment. All kinds of underweare were large, heavy und bulky, and were not ment to be seen by anyone else. When between the war women had to lurge themselfs into hard mens work, the so far very large underwear began to shrink. It was replaced by more usefull, more mascluline looking pants. The first lingerie that was designed under optical parameteres were developed at the end of the 19th century. From decade to decade the pants got smaller and smaller. Also the fabric became finer.
Lingerie in the present times
At the beginning of the 21st century the market for lingerie was driven forward by the invention of modern machines in the technology of producing fabric. Also new textiles were invented and innovative products designed. Designers put great emphasis in in bright colours, rich and erotic looking fabrics and a good, lacy feeling on the skin.Today a hole industrie is producing millions of different underclothes. Today the global lingery industrie has a volume of of totally 30 billions a year.

Today modern women can decide between many different products of lingerie. Because of 90% are wearing a bra during daytime, about 60% of the spent money in the lingerie industry is spent on bras. There Bras in fine fabrik such as silk with ornaments and all kinds of colours. But there are also sportive looking bras and funktional underwear for sports. There are more different kinds of pants. The most sold is the slip. It can be worn under narrow clothing and is usually made of fine materials as silk or cotton. At first the boxers were only worn by men. Today also women by theses kinds of undergarment. It is looking sportive and doesn’t irritate the skin because it is mostly made of cotton. There are also the little G-String, Babydolls Bodies and many other kinds of undergarment. One of the most popular forms is the pantie.
